Photo Compression

Compression and Print Quality

Compress photos for storage and sharing without ruining prints. Here’s how to stay safe.

Rules of Thumb

  • Keep a lossless copy of favorites and professional shoots.
  • For small/medium prints (≤ 8×10), balanced HEIC is typically indistinguishable.
  • For large prints, prefer gentler compression or lossless.

Checklist Before Printing

  1. Export at native resolution when possible.
  2. Use high-quality or lossless for large formats.
  3. Soft-proof colors for the lab/printer profile if available.
  4. Inspect edges and gradients at 100% zoom.
